Alyansa blames VP Sara impeachment for midterm losses

Navotas City Rep. Toby Tiangco admitted that the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte severely affected the performance of the administration-backed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas during the 2025 midterm elections.

Tiangco, who acted as campaign manager for the coalition, blamed the filing of the impeachment complaint for the drop in support, particularly from Mindanao voters.

He said they had been conducting surveys since November or December, and support from Mindanao sharply declined after the complaint was filed.

Tiangco described the impeachment as “self-inflicted,” insisting it was forced despite prior warnings that it would cause political damage.

He also disclosed that several lawmakers were allegedly pressured into signing the complaint and that there was no strong public demand to pursue it when it was filed in February.

Knowing they were losing ground in Mindanao, Tiangco said Alyansa held only one rally in the region before candidates began campaigning separately.

Tiangco emphasized that he did not support the impeachment and refused to sign the complaint, believing it should not have moved forward.

Only six out of the administration’s senatorial candidates made it to the “Magic 12,” a significant drop from expectations. Tiangco said this outcome confirms the negative impact of the impeachment case on their campaign.
