A 45-year-old Filipino mountaineer died while preparing to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, according to reports confirmed on Thursday.
Engineer Philip Santiago II passed away during the final phase of his climb to the world’s highest peak. The exact cause of his death has yet to be determined. His team is now working to retrieve and transport his body back to the base camp.
On Wednesday, Santiago shared a final social media post announcing that his group had entered the last stage of their expedition to the summit.
Nepal’s Department of Tourism confirmed that Santiago’s death is the first reported fatality involving a foreign climber in the current Mt. Everest climbing season.
Santiago was known for his passion for mountaineering and had actively documented his journey through his social media platforms, inspiring fellow Filipino adventurers.
His family has requested privacy during their time of grief.
Efforts to recover Santiago’s body continue, as weather conditions and terrain remain challenging on the mountain. Authorities have yet to release further details on the retrieval process or possible cause of death pending the return of his remains.
Mt. Everest has claimed hundreds of lives over the decades due to altitude sickness, extreme cold, and unpredictable weather, making it one of the most dangerous peaks to conquer despite advances in climbing technology and support systems.
