The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a total of 72 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes around Mt. Kanlaon on Monday morning, raising concerns among residents in Negros Island.
In its latest advisory, PHIVOLCS said the tremors originated from depths of 0 to 12 kilometers on the northwest sector of the volcano. The strongest quake was recorded at Intensity I in La Carlota City and Canlaon City.
According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and PHIVOLCS, the rise in volcanic-tectonic activity may indicate magma or gas movement beneath the volcano. Experts cautioned that this could potentially trigger steam-driven or moderate explosive eruptions if the activity persists.
Authorities reminded the public to remain vigilant and to monitor official advisories. Residents were also urged to refrain from spreading unverified information that could cause unnecessary panic.
Mt. Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, meaning it is in a state of moderate unrest. Entry into the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden explosions and rockfall.
Local officials said they are closely monitoring the situation, while disaster management teams have been placed on standby. Residents living near the volcano were advised to prepare emergency kits and stay alert for possible evacuation notices should activity intensify.
Mt. Kanlaon, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. It has a history of phreatic eruptions, with its last significant activity recorded in 2017.
