Marcos signs law postponing BARMM elections

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed a law that postponed and reset the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or BARMM elections.

The first regular election in BARMM was originally scheduled on May 12, 2025 but under the Republic Act 12123 it was reset on October 13, 2025.

The next election will be held and synchronized with the 2028 national and local elections and every three years thereafter.

The same law also extends the term of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) that acts as the interim government in BARMM.

With the move of the election date, elected Bangsamoro officials will assume office by 12 noon on October 30, 2025.

Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairperson George Garcia said that the resetting of the BARMM elections means they still have to conduct three elections this year as the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls is scheduled in December 2025.
