President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that former lawmaker Elizaldy “Zaldy” Co has been arrested and is currently detained in Prague after reportedly entering the Czech Republic without proper documents.
Marcos said Co is now under the custody of Czech authorities while legal procedures are being carried out.
The Philippine government has begun coordinating with the Czech Republic to ensure that all legal requirements are followed as officials work toward securing Co’s return to the Philippines.
“We are in close coordination with the Czech government to ensure that all legal processes are followed and to arrange for his return to the Philippines at the soonest possible time,” Marcos said in a statement.
Philippines currently has no extradition treaty with the Czech Republic, which may affect the process of returning Co to the country.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) acknowledged the President’s statement regarding Co’s reported arrest and detention in Prague.
PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police organization is coordinating with concerned government agencies and international law enforcement partners to verify the details of the reported development through official channels.
The PNP also expressed readiness to assist in ensuring that all legal procedures are properly observed, including coordination efforts related to Co’s possible return to the Philippines.
Authorities said further updates will be provided once information is officially confirmed through proper channels.
Co remains under the custody of Czech authorities as coordination between Philippine and Czech officials continues.
