Authorities prevented possible environmental damage to a Natural Park Protected Area in Catanduanes after arresting two individuals allegedly involved in illegal mining on April 15, 2026.
Police said the operation followed intelligence monitoring conducted by authorities that led to the suspects being caught in the act of conducting mining activities without the required permits.
Seized from the suspects were two transparent vials containing water with suspected gold dust weighing about 0.0002 grams and estimated to be worth approximately P110. Also confiscated were two round wooden panning basins locally known as batea in different sizes, a pry bar, two shovels, a blue plastic strainer, a red pitcher, and improvised equipment identified as a “gold flasher.”
The suspects were identified only by their aliases “Rey” and “Ando,” both adults and residents of San Miguel, Catanduanes.
The arrested individuals, along with the confiscated evidence, were brought to the San Miguel Municipal Police Station for documentation and proper disposition. Authorities said the suspects are facing charges for illegal mining under existing laws.
Police said mining activities require authorization from the government and are strictly prohibited inside protected areas. Such activities may cause environmental damage, including soil degradation, water pollution, and destruction of natural resources and biodiversity.
Under the leadership of PBGen Erosito N. Miranda, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 5 (PRO 5), authorities continue to carry out operations across the region aimed at suppressing criminal activity and preventing environmental destruction.
Officials said the operation forms part of intensified police efforts under the Philippine National Police Focused Agenda, which aims to maintain peace and order while protecting the country’s natural resources.
