The impeachment hearing against Vice President Sara Duterte will proceed after the Supreme Court did not issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) to halt the process.
House Speaker Bojie Dy III said the proceedings will continue through a fair and evidence-based hearing, ensuring that all sides will be given the opportunity to present their arguments.
The development followed Duterte’s petition to the Supreme Court seeking to stop the impeachment process. In her petition, Duterte argued that the proceedings conducted by the House Justice Committee were unconstitutional.
She also claimed that the continuation of the proceedings could result in a miscarriage of justice, raising concerns about the legality of the process.
Despite the petition, the Supreme Court did not release a TRO, allowing the impeachment proceedings to move forward as scheduled.
According to Dy, the process will follow established procedures and remain grounded in evidence presented during the hearings. He reiterated that the impeachment process is intended to provide a venue where both sides can be heard.
The impeachment complaint against Duterte is scheduled to resume on April 14, marking the continuation of deliberations related to the case.
Officials emphasized that the hearings will be conducted in accordance with legal standards to ensure fairness throughout the proceedings.
The absence of a TRO from the Supreme Court effectively allows the impeachment process to continue without interruption. Lawmakers involved in the case are expected to proceed with the scheduled sessions.
The upcoming hearing on April 14 is expected to address matters raised in the complaint as the process moves forward under the established legislative framework.
