Iloilo residents shelter in steel pipe as typhoon Tino batters town

Several residents of Barangay Tabucan, Calinog, Iloilo took shelter inside a large steel pipe as Typhoon Tino pounded their town with strong winds and heavy rain.

The residents said they decided to move after feeling their houses shake during the storm. The steel pipe, known locally as a tamburong, was close to their homes and offered quick protection as the weather worsened.

They brought small amounts of food and waited inside until the rain and wind eased later in the day.

Residents clarified that the barangay’s evacuation centers were open and that they were not neglected by local officials. They chose the steel pipe because it was nearby and provided immediate safety from the storm’s impact.

When the weather improved by afternoon, the group returned to their homes without injury.
