The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tagum has warned the public to remain vigilant following reports of individuals allegedly pretending to be priests, altar servers and seminarians while asking for donations in parts of Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
According to information received by the Diocese, the individuals were reportedly seen around 4 p.m. recently at the Tagum Overland Transport Integrated Terminal. They were approaching store owners, passengers and bystanders while soliciting financial assistance.
In response, the Diocese issued a clarification stating that the individuals involved are not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tagum.
Church officials also emphasized that the Diocese has not authorized any priests, seminarians, altar servers or other Church personnel to conduct solicitation or fundraising activities in public places such as terminals, streets or similar locations.
The Diocese urged the faithful and the general public to exercise caution and discernment when approached by individuals claiming to represent the Church.
It also reminded the public that legitimate Church-related fundraising or charitable activities are properly coordinated through parishes or officially announced by the Diocese.
The Diocese further advised residents not to give donations to individuals engaging in such activities.
Instead, the public is encouraged to report the matter to proper authorities or inform the Diocese so appropriate action can be taken.
Church officials also appealed to the community to help spread the advisory to prevent possible deception and protect the integrity and mission of the Church.
