Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte’s family claims he is denied urgent medical care following his shocking arrest at NAIA

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 upon his arrival from Hong Kong on Tuesday. His daughter, Veronica “Kitty” Duterte, claimed that authorities were refusing to provide her father with proper medical care.

On Instagram, Kitty Duterte posted a photo of the former president, stating that he is being confined without access to a hospital despite his worsening condition. She expressed concerns that he is “getting weaker by the minute.”

Legal Basis for Arrest

Duterte’s arrest follows an ongoing investigation authorized by the International Criminal Court (ICC) Pre-Trial Chamber I in 2021. The ICC Appeals Chamber upheld the decision in 2023, allowing the probe into alleged crimes against humanity during Duterte’s controversial drug war.

Under Republic Act No. 9851, the Philippines recognizes international humanitarian law and crimes against humanity, which serve as the legal foundation for potential charges. Additionally, the Philippine Supreme Court’s 2021 ruling in Pangilinan v. Cayetano affirmed the country’s obligations despite its withdrawal from the ICC.

Family Raises Alarm Over Duterte’s Health

Following the arrest, Duterte’s family has urged authorities to allow immediate medical intervention. His daughter insists they are being prevented from transferring him to a hospital for treatment.

The Philippine government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest and the alleged denial of medical care. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
