The legal camp of former President Rodrigo Duterte is studying the possibility of requesting document disclosures related to the alleged role of former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV in the case before the International Criminal Court.
Defense lawyer Nicholas Kaufman said he is considering asking for documents connected to the supposed cooperation of Trillanes with the ICC.
According to Kaufman, the request could be filed either with the Office of the Prosecutor or the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber.
The lawyer said the potential request may involve documents related to Trillanes’ alleged participation in the case, including matters concerning witnesses.
Kaufman said the move is part of the defense team’s review of the proceedings surrounding the case filed against Duterte before the international tribunal.
He also argued that the case should not proceed to trial due to what he described as a lack of “substantial grounds” in the evidence presented.
Kaufman clarified that their camp is not denying that deaths occurred during the anti-drug campaign under Duterte’s administration.
However, he said the defense maintains that Duterte should not be held responsible for those deaths.
The statement comes as discussions continue over the ICC’s case connected to the Philippine government’s anti-drug campaign.
Duterte’s legal team has been examining legal options related to the proceedings, including the possible disclosure of documents that may shed light on the involvement of individuals linked to the case.
