Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian defended the Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP) amid allegations linking it to a “pork barrel” scheme.
The controversy surfaced after former Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio described the cash assistance program as resembling a pork barrel and alleged that barangay officials are responsible for selecting beneficiaries.
Gatchalian categorically denied the claims, stating that AKAP is a targeted initiative to assist minimum-wage earners and low-income families suffering from inflation’s impact. According to Gatchalian, the DSWD field offices directly identify and serve beneficiaries, ensuring transparency and eliminating political interference.
He emphasized that AKAP’s primary goal is to protect the vulnerable from economic hardships, with the program following strict implementation guidelines.
Despite the accusations, Gatchalian reaffirmed the department’s commitment to fairness and accountability in delivering aid. He also urged critics to examine the program’s structure and intent before making unfounded allegations.
The AKAP controversy has sparked public debate, but Gatchalian stood firm, highlighting the DSWD’s dedication to helping Filipinos weather the challenges of rising consumer prices.
