Millions in smuggled cigarettes seized

Authorities confiscated smuggled cigarettes worth an estimated ₱3,657,899 on December 24, 2024, at the Task Force Davao Sirawan Joint Checkpoint in Barangay Sirawan, Toril, Davao City.

The smuggling attempt was foiled when checkpoint personnel flagged down a white Isuzu pickup truck during a routine inspection. Upon examination, officers discovered five reams of Green Hills brand cigarettes in plain view. This led to further inspection, uncovering cases of Green Hills and Bros Red cigarettes stashed at the back of the vehicle.

The driver failed to provide any documentation for the cargo, prompting authorities to detain him and alert the Toril Police Station and Bureau of Customs (BOC).

The operation yielded 2,737 reams of Green Hills cigarettes and 1,918 reams of Bros Red cigarettes, along with the Isuzu dropside truck used in transporting the contraband.

The driver remains in police custody under the Toril Police Station, while the confiscated items have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper handling.

PBGEN Leon Victor Z. Rosete, PRO 11 Regional Director, lauded the coordinated efforts of Task Force Davao, the PNP, and the BOC. “This is a testament to our commitment to safeguarding the region against illegal activities,” Rosete said.

Law enforcement officials emphasized their unwavering vigilance in combating smuggling and protecting local industries, particularly as Davao remains a known hotspot for contraband entry.

This operation showcases the authorities’ determination to address persistent smuggling activities in the region, sending a strong message to criminal networks.
