The Department of Education (DepEd) has called on local government units (LGUs) to carefully weigh both student safety and learning continuity when deciding to suspend classes.
In an advisory, the agency said it respects the authority of LGUs to suspend classes in the interest of public safety. However, DepEd emphasized that while precaution is important, prolonged suspensions can disrupt learning and affect student development.
According to the department, every decision should reflect both concern for safety and a commitment to continuous learning.
DepEd assured the public that it is already coordinating with Schools Division Offices to ensure the implementation of alternative delivery modes for affected learners.
It also reiterated that continuing education will remain a priority.
In closing, DepEd urged LGUs to thoroughly assess whether a class suspension is truly necessary for public safety before enforcing it.
