The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has filed inciting to sedition and unlawful utterances charges against former President Rodrigo Duterte over his controversial “kill senators” remark.
CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre III clarified that the agency acted independently and did not seek Malacañang’s approval before filing the complaint.
The charges stem from Duterte’s statement suggesting the killing of 15 senators, which some dismissed as a joke. However, Torre emphasized that such remarks could incite negative actions from the former president’s supporters, prompting law enforcement intervention.
“This is purely a law enforcement action. We saw violations of the law, so we acted accordingly,” Torre explained.
He added that the CIDG does not need a direct complaint from senators to pursue legal action.
The case has sparked political debate, with supporters and critics of Duterte closely watching how the legal proceedings will unfold.
