Charges against VP Duterte are not politically motivated – PNP

The Philippine National Police (PNP) defended its decision to file charges against Vice President Sara Duterte, emphasizing that the move was not politically motivated but rooted in the agency’s constitutional mandate. PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco D. Marbil said the cases, which include charges of direct assault and disobedience, demonstrate the law’s impartial application.

“The PNP remains committed to enforcing the law without fear or favor. Justice is not selective,” Marbil stated, addressing allegations of bias. He noted that failing to act could damage public trust in the police force. “If we do not file cases, people may think we’re afraid to act, that the law only applies to the powerless. We cannot allow such perceptions to take root.”

Critics, however, compared the situation to past controversies, such as the selective enforcement during the “tokhang” operations of the previous administration. Marbil rejected these parallels, asserting that the PNP is committed to fairness and human rights.

The PNP chief urged the public to trust in the justice system, reminding them that due process is guaranteed for all individuals. “This is not about politics; it’s about accountability and ensuring that the rule of law prevails,” he concluded.
