Police officers from Manila raided the home of Cebu People’s Indignation Rally organizer Ernest “Jun” Abines past midnight, allegedly in connection with unauthorized access to police information.
Authorities served a search warrant at Abines’ residence near Maharlika Gym, Brgy. Sambag 2, Cebu City, and confiscated his phone. As of this writing, he remains unreachable.
The operation follows a statement from CIDG Chief BGen Nicolas Torre III, who accused Abines of spreading false information regarding his hospitalization. Torre confirmed applying for a search warrant to retrieve the devices allegedly used in the act.
“Actions have consequences. You spread false information about me, causing concern among my family and friends. But unlike your idol, I believe in due process,” Torre stated in a Facebook post. He emphasized that the government under the “Bagong Pilipinas” initiative does not resort to extrajudicial means but will still ensure justice through legal action.
Abines, the lead convenor of Hakbang ng mga Maisug sa Cebu, was scheduled to spearhead the Cebu People’s Indignation Rally at 4 PM in Mandaue City. He had earlier confirmed the attendance of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The timing of the raid has sparked concerns among supporters, raising questions about possible political motivations behind the operation.
