President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to take a more active role in protecting democracy as the country commemorated Ninoy Aquino Day.
In his message marking the occasion, Marcos emphasized the importance of learning from history as the Philippines faces challenges including disinformation, division and distrust in institutions.
The president said the collective responsibility of Filipinos remains important in strengthening democracy and the country’s institutions.
Marcos also stressed the need to respect the rights and dignity of every person, uphold the rule of law and ensure that every Filipino has an opportunity to benefit from the country’s development.
He said the lessons of history should continue to guide Filipinos in building a more peaceful and prosperous nation.
Ninoy Aquino Day is observed in memory of former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., whose assassination on Aug. 21, 1983, became a significant event in Philippine history.
In his message, Marcos focused on the role of Filipinos in preserving democratic values and strengthening institutions amid present-day challenges.
The president’s call comes as the country marks the annual commemoration of Aquino’s legacy and the historical events associated with his death.
Marcos said respect for individual rights, adherence to the rule of law and shared responsibility are important in maintaining and strengthening democracy.
