Castro files NBI complaint over alleged online threats

Palace Press Officer Usec. Claire Castro has filed a complaint before the National Bureau of Investigation over alleged threatening and harassing content posted on a Facebook page linked to a pro-Duterte blogger.

Castro said she sought the NBI’s assistance after posts from the Facebook page “Luminous by Trixie Cruz-Angeles & Ahmed Paglinawan” went beyond criticism and, in her view, amounted to threats and harassment.

According to Castro, the post in question appeared on Jan. 2. She cited specific lines from the post that she said were alarming, including statements implying she was merely being used and references suggesting physical harm tied to her actions.

Castro said these statements prompted her to formally raise the matter with investigators, citing concerns for her safety and the nature of the language used against her online. She did not disclose further details on the specific legal provisions cited in her complaint.

Following the filing of the complaint, the administrators of the Facebook page issued a statement denying wrongdoing. The page described the complaint as an attempt to suppress speech critical of the Marcos administration.

In its statement, the page said Castro had previously been criticized and labeled in other posts across different platforms but had not taken similar action before. The page maintained that its content fell within the bounds of free expression and political criticism.

The NBI has yet to release a statement on the status of the complaint or any possible investigation. It remains unclear whether the case will lead to formal charges or further legal action.
