The family of a 6-year-old boy is mourning his death after he was bitten by a cobra on the afternoon of November 11. The victim, known as Yuri, a Grade 1 pupil, was immediately rushed to a local hospital but was later transferred to a hospital in Cagayan de Oro City due to the unavailability of an anti-venom vaccine in Bukidnon.
According to his aunt, Mildred Reymundo, doctors tried to save him, but the venom had already spread too far. “His body did not accept the vaccine,” she said, adding that the boy succumbed just two hours after being bitten by the cobra, which had hidden in a box of toys.
The family and residents expressed deep disappointment over the lack of anti-venom vaccine in Bukidnon, which they believe could have saved the boy’s life.
The incident has prompted calls from local residents for authorities and officials in Bukidnon to address the shortage of anti-venom vaccines. They stressed the need for immediate action, given the number of snake bite cases reported in the province.
