The Senate is set to investigate the reported unauthorized transactions on the mobile financial service GCash. This follows complaints from users on November 8 and 9 about unauthorized transfers from their accounts.
Several users reported that amounts ranging from P1,000 to P2,000 were deducted from their accounts while they were asleep, and transferred to unknown numbers. The incident has raised concerns among the estimated 76 million registered GCash users.
G-Xchange Inc., the subsidiary that operates GCash, stated that the error was due to an ongoing system reconciliation process and not because of hackers. However, the explanation has not quelled the fears of many users who experienced the unauthorized transactions.
Senator Risa Hontiveros emphasized the importance of investigating the issue in her resolution, highlighting the need to protect consumers and ensure the security of financial transactions. “Unauthorized transfers while we slept,” users claim, pointing to the severity of the issue.
The controversy has sparked a debate about the security measures in place for digital financial services and the accountability of service providers. The Senate’s investigation aims to uncover the root cause of the glitch and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As the investigation unfolds, GCash users are urged to monitor their accounts closely and report any suspicious activity. The Senate’s probe is expected to bring clarity and reassurance to the millions of Filipinos relying on GCash for their financial transactions.
