Ateneo Law Student Council expresses disappointment over Cayetano

The Ateneo Law Student Council said it believes its alumnus, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano, has failed to demonstrate the “ethical leadership” expected of him as an Atenean.

In a statement, the council said that once their alumni serve in public office, their actions reflect the values of their alma mater.

The group added that when Atenean lawyers defend impunity or weaken mechanisms of accountability, it is only right for the Ateneo community to express its disappointment.

The council further emphasized that Cayetano’s recent actions have disappointed students, particularly what it described as his commitment to the absence of accountability.

In the end, the group laid out its calls and appeals.

Among these were calls to stop Senator Ronald dela Rosa from allegedly evading the international legal process; for the Senate to fulfill its constitutional mandate; for Ateneo Law alumni to remember the kind of lawyers the institution trained them to be; and for Senate President Cayetano to reflect on whether the principles he now upholds are aligned with what Ateneo Law stands for.
