119 illegal firearms crushed, 64 scholarships awarded in Pagadian City

A total of 119 loose firearms and various explosives were destroyed Monday, Sept. 29, 2025, in a government-led ceremony at the Provincial Government Complex in Dao, Pagadian City.

The event was part of the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Program and also included the awarding of 64 educational scholarships to children of families who voluntarily surrendered their firearms.

Led by the 53rd Infantry “Matapat” Battalion under the 1st Infantry “Tabak” Division of the Philippine Army, the program was held in partnership with the provincial government of Zamboanga del Sur under Governor Divina Grace Yu. Local officials, including members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, joined the ceremony.

The destroyed weapons ranged from improvised guns to high-powered rifles, flattened by a road roller before the public. Officials said the symbolic act highlighted the government’s determination to stop the circulation of illegal firearms.

Governor Yu called on barangay leaders to work closely with security forces to prevent the proliferation of weapons. “We cannot tolerate illegal firearms,” Yu said, urging collective action to protect communities.

As part of the peace effort, 64 students received scholarships funded by the provincial government. Officials described the initiative as a “carrot-and-stick” approach, pairing disarmament with educational opportunities.

Military leaders, including Major General Yegor Rey Baroquillo Jr. and Commodore Rejard Marfe, also underscored the importance of collaboration in ensuring lasting peace in Mindanao.

Officials said the destruction of firearms, coupled with scholarships, represents a holistic approach to peace and security in Zamboanga del Sur.
