Alabel Police Chief warns of charges against Cops involved in smuggled cigarettes

The Alabel Municipal Police Station chief warned that he will not hesitate to file charges against police officers involved in smuggling.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Benjie Ancheta issued the warning after a store owner revealed that “tropa” or friends delivered smuggled cigarettes to establishments.

Ancheta emphasized that he will pursue legal action if investigations confirm that police officers participated in the delivery of illegal products.

He admitted that he did not fully understand what the store owner meant by “tropa,” but assured immediate action against suspects.

Residents reported that individuals are actively selling smuggled cigarettes house-to-house, raising community concerns about illegal trading activities worsening within barangays.

Barangay Kawas officials expressed alarm over these reports and immediately mobilized their personnel to warn stores against accepting illegal cigarette offers.

The barangay captain instructed barangay workers, particularly barangay health workers, to conduct door-to-door reminders and issue strict warnings to local stores.

They aim to stop the circulation of smuggled cigarettes by informing business owners about the legal risks associated with selling contraband.

Police also appealed to sari-sari store owners, urging them to reject offers and avoid buying or selling smuggled cigarettes.

Authorities stressed that participating in the illegal cigarette trade could lead to criminal charges and business closures, harming livelihoods and community safety.

Earlier, police arrested a resident from General Santos City for selling smuggled cigarettes, highlighting the seriousness of the ongoing illegal trade.

The suspect claimed the smuggled cigarettes were merely handed to him, refusing to disclose further details regarding their actual source or suppliers.

Police vowed to continue investigations to identify all individuals involved, including potential protectors within law enforcement, ensuring accountability and transparency in operations.
