Working student shot in daylight robbery in Davao del Norte

A 22-year-old delivery rider was shot after two motorcycle-riding suspects attempted to rob him in broad daylight in Barangay Sto. Niño, Carmen, Davao del Norte police said.

The incident occurred at about 2:22 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2026, at Purok 6-B, according to a report from the Carmen Municipal Police Station.

The victim was identified as Jayrico “Rico” Grancho, a working student taking up Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship at Davao del Norte State College. Authorities said Grancho was on his way to deliver parcels when two men on a motorcycle overtook him and attempted to force him to stop.

Instead of complying, Grancho tried to escape by speeding away on his motorcycle. The suspects pursued him and later shot him, hitting his shoulder. After the shooting, the assailants fled the scene.

Grancho was initially taken to Gaviola Hospital for emergency treatment before being transferred to Davao Regional Medical Center, where he remains confined.

Erica Jane Suhayon, a classmate of the victim, said Grancho is still recovering from his injury. She added that the incident forced him to stop working temporarily, affecting his ability to continue his studies.

Police said the victim had difficulty identifying the suspects, noting that both were wearing bonnets and riding a ladies-type motorcycle. Authorities have launched a dragnet operation to track down those responsible.

Meanwhile, the victim’s family and friends have started appealing for financial assistance to help cover medical expenses and support his recovery as the investigation continues.
