North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward waters off its eastern coast on Thursday, South Korea’s military said.
According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the missiles were launched at around 12:30 p.m. local time from an area near Wonsan on North Korea’s eastern coast.
Following the launches, South Korea’s military strengthened surveillance and maintained readiness for possible additional missile tests. It also continued sharing information with the United States and Japan.
Japan’s Defense Ministry said an object believed to be a ballistic missile had been launched but fell outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The Japan Coast Guard also reported that the projectile had already fallen into the sea.
North Korea last launched ballistic missiles on October 12, amid heightened tensions along the inter-Korean border following a landmine explosion that injured South Korean soldiers last month.
Pyongyang has conducted missile tests on more than 10 occasions so far this year.
