Vice President Sara Duterte commended troops of the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion following their recent combat operation in Negros Occidental that authorities said resulted in multiple fatalities during an armed encounter.
In a statement dated April 25, Duterte praised soldiers under Lt. Col. Eric Alfonso, citing their courage, discipline and commitment to protecting communities.
“On behalf of the Office of the Vice President, I extend my commendation to the brave men and women of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army for your recent successful combat operation,” Duterte said.
She said the troops’ actions reflected dedication to maintaining peace, security and the rule of law. Duterte also called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant in guiding their children and preventing them from being recruited into violent extremist groups.
The statement followed reports of an armed clash on April 19 in Barangay Salamanca, Toboso, Negros Occidental involving government forces and suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Military officials earlier reported that 19 suspected rebels were killed during the encounter, while one government soldier sustained minor injuries. Authorities also reported the recovery of several firearms following the firefight.
The incident drew public attention after reports indicated that several individuals, including a journalist and other civilians, were among those killed during the operation.
The Philippine Army denied allegations that civilians were targeted, saying troops acted professionally and in accordance with established rules of engagement and international humanitarian law.
While Duterte did not identify a specific operation in her statement, military reports linked the commendation to the Toboso clash, which authorities described as a significant development against insurgent groups operating in northern Negros Occidental.
