Police arrested the primary suspect in the killing of an LGBTQ+ member during a joint follow-up and curfew operation in Kalilangan, Bukidnon, early Wednesday.
The suspect, identified only by the alias “Rene,” 19, was arrested at about 12:56 a.m. on Aug. 6 in Sitio Sabang, Barangay Central Poblacion, Kalilangan.
Police Maj. Teresita Manejero identified the suspect as a resident of Sitio Panamsamon in the municipality of Kalilangan.
Authorities said the suspect was wanted in connection with the killing of a victim identified only by the alias “Betty,” an LGBTQ+ member who was killed on July 27 in Barangay 1, Malaybalay City.
According to police, officers received information that the suspect was hiding in the area.
During the operation, an officer approached the suspect to enforce the curfew. Police alleged that the suspect suddenly drew a knife and attempted to stab the officer but was immediately subdued and arrested.
Investigators said the suspect had recently been released from jail after cases of carnapping and robbery filed against him were withdrawn.
During police questioning, authorities said the suspect admitted killing the victim and claimed the victim was “too noisy.”
The suspect remains in police custody.
Authorities are preparing to file charges of murder, direct assault and illegal possession of a deadly weapon against him.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they continue efforts to pursue justice for the victim’s family and maintain peace and order in the community.
