Two graduates of the University of the Philippines Diliman have developed BiDaKidney, a low-cost and semi-automated machine designed to make peritoneal dialysis easier for patients.
The invention was created by Andrew Jacob Buensalido and Allyson Cabrestante.
Weighing around 2.5 kilograms, BiDaKidney aims to simplify the manual and repetitive process of peritoneal dialysis, potentially allowing patients to use it not only at home but also at school or work.
The team targets a price of around 6,200 pesos, significantly lower than commercial automated peritoneal dialysis machines.
For their invention, Buensalido and Cabrestante were named the 2026 James Dyson Award Philippines winners and received 398,280 pesos to further develop BiDaKidney.
