Seven people were killed and one injured in a tragic van accident in Barangay Cebuano, Tupi, South Cotabato, on Dec. 23.
The victims, all tourists from Cagayan de Oro City, were returning from Magsangyaw, a popular tourist destination, when their L300 van reportedly lost its brakes on a steep section of the road. The crash occurred around 3 p.m. in Purok Lote.
Police said the driver, who is the sole survivor, is currently hospitalized and recovering. “It lost its brakes,” he reportedly told investigators, recounting the terrifying moments before the crash. Authorities believe the van’s failure to stop may have been caused by a mechanical issue, but the exact cause is still under investigation.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the van careening uncontrollably before crashing. Local officials are urging motorists to prioritize vehicle maintenance, particularly during holiday travel.
