Tom Selleck furious over ‘ultimate betrayal’ as Donnie Wahlberg takes over Blue Bloods spinoff without him

Tom Selleck is reportedly furious after learning that his former Blue Bloods co-star Donnie Wahlberg will lead a newly announced spinoff series, Boston Blue, without him. Sources close to the 80-year-old actor claim he had no idea CBS was developing a continuation of the long-running police drama, making the news even more of a shock.

A New Era Without Frank Reagan

For 14 seasons, Selleck portrayed New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, while Wahlberg played his son, NYPD detective Danny Reagan. However, the upcoming spinoff shifts the action to Boston, following Danny as he joins the city’s police department alongside detective Lena Peters. The drastic change has reportedly left Selleck blindsided and outraged.

“This is a huge betrayal,” a source said. “The Reagans never left New York. Now Danny is just moving to Boston? Tom feels like the show is being taken from him.”

While Wahlberg has deep personal ties to Boston, critics argue that the series feels more like a reboot than a proper continuation. Selleck allegedly believes CBS was eager to move forward without him, particularly because of his high salary.

Friendship Shattered Over Hollywood Deal

Selleck and Wahlberg shared a strong bond on and off-screen, with Wahlberg previously calling the veteran actor a great mentor. However, insiders claim the spinoff has permanently fractured their relationship.

“Tom thought of himself as a father figure to Donnie, coaching him through his acting career,” a source explained. “Now, he feels completely blindsided.”

CBS executives officially canceled Blue Bloods earlier this year, despite an outcry from devoted fans. Selleck reportedly fought to keep the show alive, only to later discover that Wahlberg had secured his own spinoff behind closed doors.

“Donnie could have refused to move forward without Tom,” an insider claimed. “But he didn’t, and Tom will never forgive him for it.”

Despite the controversy, Wahlberg has publicly praised Selleck, making no mention of any tension. Meanwhile, sources suggest Selleck is still holding out hope that he will be invited to join the new series in some capacity. However, insiders believe that the damage has already been done.

“This isn’t just a TV shake-up—it’s the end of their friendship,” the source added. “Tom feels completely betrayed.”
