Three minors drowned after being swept into the waters of Moroboro Dam in Barangay Moroboro, Dingle, Iloilo, on Dec. 30, authorities said.
Initial investigation showed that six minors were walking along the edge of the dam when one of them slipped and fell into the water. One of the companions attempted to rescue the child, but strong water currents made the situation worse, authorities said.
Other members of the group later jumped into the water in an effort to help their friends. However, the powerful flow of water at the dam overwhelmed them, resulting in multiple victims being pulled under.
Search, rescue and retrieval operations were immediately conducted following reports of the incident. Rescuers managed to save three minors, two of whom were rushed to the Iloilo Provincial Hospital for immediate medical treatment.
Despite the rescue efforts, three minors were declared dead. Authorities identified the victims as Angelo, 11, Jarryl, 13, and Jimmy, 13.
The bodies of Angelo and Jarryl were recovered in the afternoon and evening of Dec. 30. Jimmy’s body was recovered the following morning, Dec. 31, after continued retrieval operations at the dam.
Local authorities said the strong current in the dam contributed to the tragic outcome of the incident. They reiterated warnings to the public, especially minors, to avoid dangerous areas such as dams and waterways with strong water flow.
The local government and responding authorities expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and assured them of assistance following the tragedy.
Officials also reminded parents and guardians to closely supervise children and to be cautious near bodies of water, particularly during the holiday season when outdoor activities are more common.
