Rest comes at a price as ‘no work, no pay’ takes effect

Filipino workers must choose between rest and extra income as the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) enforces the “no work, no pay” rule on Friday, October 31, a special non-working day.

In a labor advisory, DOLE reminded employers on Thursday, October 30, that they must not pay workers who skip duty on Friday, unless a company policy, practice, or collective bargaining agreement grants pay for special days.

DOLE said employees who report for work on October 31 will receive an additional 30 percent of their basic wage for the first eight hours of duty.

Employers must also pay another 30 percent of the hourly rate for work beyond eight hours.

If the employee works on a rest day that coincides with the special holiday, the employer must pay 150 percent of the basic wage for the first eight hours and an additional 30 percent for overtime.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared Oct. 31 as a special non-working day under Proclamation No. 727 to extend the Undas break, giving workers the option to rest or earn more.
