Remulla Still Reviewing Former Ombudsman’s Decision on Villanueva’s Case

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla is still reviewing the 2016 dismissal order against Senator Joel Villanueva.

Yesterday, Remulla announced that he would no longer proceed with his earlier plan to send a letter to Senate President Tito Sotto, which sought to enforce the 2016 dismissal order against the senator.

He explained that he was surprised to learn about a “secret decision” made by former Ombudsman Samuel Martires, which granted Villanueva’s motion for reconsideration—effectively reversing the 2016 order issued by then Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales.

Remulla also revealed that he was not immediately informed about the details of the senator’s case. He said he should have had prompt access to the case records, but this did not happen.

According to him, he only saw the documents yesterday when they were brought to his office after he had been interviewed by a news network.
