Residents in Pandan Mahawak, Medellin, Cebu slept wrapped in plastic sheets after the 6.9-magnitude earthquake damaged homes and triggered fear.
Arg De Real shared their ordeal, saying, “We slept outside wrapped in cellophane because it was too dangerous inside our houses.”
The quake struck Northern Cebu on September 30, killing dozens and damaging houses, while aftershocks continued rattling already weakened structures across communities.
Rain poured heavily after the tremor, forcing residents to seek makeshift protection outside since reentering homes risked sudden collapse and injury.
“We were cold and wet, but safer outside. At least we avoided possible collapse if we stayed inside,” De Real added.
Authorities continue damage assessments, urging residents to remain cautious. “Safety comes first, even if it means discomfort during recovery,” officials firmly emphasized.
Relief organizations and volunteers are coordinating to provide tarpaulins, tents, and blankets to families who currently rely only on improvised protection.
