PNP on alert for March 11 protests marking Duterte arrest anniversary

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has been placed on alert for possible protest actions on March 11, marking one year since the arrest, transfer, and detention of former president Rodrigo Duterte in The Hague.

PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police monitored several social media posts calling for a large motorcade rally to mark the anniversary.

According to reports, the planned route of the motorcade is expected to pass along EDSA and end at Villamor Airbase. The activity aims to commemorate the first anniversary of Duterte’s transfer to international custody, where he is facing charges of crimes against humanity.

Authorities said the increased deployment is intended to ensure public safety and maintain order in case rallies or gatherings occur.

Despite the heightened alert, Nartatez reminded police personnel to observe maximum tolerance in handling demonstrators.

He also instructed officers to act in accordance with the law and follow proper procedures when responding to protest activities.

The PNP said it continues to monitor developments and coordinate with local authorities as the March 11 anniversary approaches.
