Philippines declares actions are not controlled by any foreign power after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s ‘shadow play’ claims

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has strongly rejected China’s claims that the Philippines’ actions in the South China Sea are staged and dictated by external forces. The agency declared on Monday that the country operates independently and prioritizes national interests above all else.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently alleged that the Philippines is merely playing a role in a larger geopolitical script written by external powers. He described the maritime conflict as a “shadow play,” claiming that every move made by the Philippines is orchestrated and broadcasted by Western media to tarnish China’s reputation.

However, the DFA responded with a firm statement refuting these accusations. The agency emphasized that China must recognize the Philippines as an independent and sovereign state whose actions are guided by the well-being of its people.

Philippines asserts sovereignty amid South China Sea tensions

The DFA underscored that China’s attempt to shift the narrative does not change the fundamental issue: Beijing’s refusal to abide by international law. The agency cited the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling, which invalidated China’s sweeping territorial claims in the region.

“No creative analogy or play of words will mask the real issue,” the DFA stated. “China’s refusal to comply with international law and its continued aggressive behavior in Philippine waters remain the root of escalating tensions.”

The DFA also pointed out that China’s actions, including its alleged coercion and militarization in the contested waters, have severely affected Filipino communities and local fisherfolk who depend on the sea for their livelihood.

Call for responsible actions and diplomatic engagement

In response to China’s accusations, the DFA urged all nations to avoid inflammatory statements and instead focus on diplomatic solutions. The agency stressed the importance of upholding a rules-based international order to prevent further tensions in the South China Sea.

The maritime dispute between the Philippines and China has been an ongoing source of friction, with several incidents of confrontations at sea. Despite repeated protests from Manila, Beijing has continued its expansion and enforcement activities in areas claimed by the Philippines.

As tensions remain high, the Philippine government maintains its commitment to defending its territorial rights while seeking peaceful resolutions through legal and diplomatic means. The DFA reaffirmed that the country will not allow external influence to dictate its actions and will continue to uphold its sovereignty.

The latest exchange between the two nations signals yet another chapter in the prolonged territorial dispute, with both sides showing no signs of backing down. However, the Philippines remains steadfast in its stance that adherence to international law is the only way to resolve the issue fairly and justly.
