Philippine government willing to cooperate if Duterte surrenders to ICC, says Executive Secretary

Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin announced that the Philippine government will not stop former President Rodrigo Duterte from surrendering to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if he chooses to do so. He made it clear that the government will not obstruct Duterte’s decision if he decides to submit himself to ICC jurisdiction.

Bersamin also explained that if the ICC refers the case to Interpol and issues a red notice, Philippine authorities will have no choice but to comply. “Domestic law enforcement agencies will fully cooperate with Interpol,” he stated, underscoring the country’s commitment to international law.

The ICC’s investigation into Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, which includes allegations of human rights violations, remains controversial. However, the Philippine government insists that it retains jurisdiction over domestic matters.
