Seven members of the Philippine boxing team are set to compete at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, hoping to use their international experience to end the country’s 16-year gold medal drought in the tournament.
Leading the squad are Olympic medalists Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas, and Carlo Paalam, while Eumir Marcial’s participation remains dependent on his upcoming bout in the professional division.
Also set to represent the Philippines are Riza Pasuit, Junmilardo Ogayre, and Norlan Petecio.
Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines president Marcus Manalo acknowledged the tough challenge ahead, noting that other delegations will also be determined to beat the Filipinos.
Still, Manalo expressed confidence in the national boxers, particularly after their successful training camp in Thailand as they prepare for the Asian Games.
