A station commander of the Philippine Coast Guard was killed in a shooting in Barangay Veterans Village, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, on Jan. 15, 2026, authorities said.
The victim was identified as Lt. Junior Grade Glennick Ytang, 32, an officer of the Philippine Coast Guard assigned as station commander of Coast Guard Station Zamboanga Sibugay under the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao.
In a statement, the Philippine Coast Guard expressed its condolences to the family of Ytang following his death.
Based on initial investigation, Ytang was inside his vehicle when an unidentified assailant fired multiple shots at him, police said. The suspect fled the scene after the attack.
Details about the suspect’s identity and the firearm used were not immediately available. Authorities have not released information on the possible motive behind the killing.
Ytang was a member of the Coast Guard Officers’ Course Class 26-2020, known as “Hiraya Masiklab,” according to the agency.
The Philippine Coast Guard said it is closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police to ensure a thorough investigation and to help identify and arrest those responsible for the shooting.
Police said the case remains under investigation as they continue to gather evidence and verify information related to the incident.
Officials have not confirmed whether the killing was connected to Ytang’s official duties. No further details were released as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
