Malacañang has responded to Vice President Sara Duterte’s criticism of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s presence at a drug destruction event in Capas, Tarlac.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, Marcos personally attended the destruction of illegal drugs as part of his administration’s commitment to a serious and transparent anti-drug campaign.
Castro said the activity aimed to serve both as a warning to criminals and as an inspiration to the public, adding that seeing the destruction firsthand sends a stronger message than relying on reports.
She also cited a past controversy in 2018, when illegal drugs allegedly disappeared from magnetic lifters, to justify the importance of the President’s physical presence at such events.
To support the Palace’s defense, Castro referenced a newspaper clipping showing former President Rodrigo Duterte also attended a drug incineration event in 2020.
“The President’s actions are not for publicity,” Castro said. “They are part of his duty to show the public what steps the government is taking in the fight against illegal drugs.”
VP Sara had earlier raised concerns over Marcos’ attendance, though no direct response has been issued from her camp following the Palace’s remarks.
