P70.8M marijuana seized in Tawi-Tawi; two suspects arrested

Authorities seized an estimated P70.8 million worth of marijuana during a buy-bust operation in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, on Jan. 26, officials said.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, or PDEA-BARMM, led the operation with support from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police.

The operation was conducted inside a hotel in Barangay Pasiagan, according to authorities.

Two suspects were arrested, including a Malaysian national and a former Sangguniang Kabataan chairman from Barangay Tubig-Boh. Officials did not immediately release further details about the identities of the suspects.

Seized from the operation were various types of marijuana products, including dried marijuana kush as well as dried stalks and leaves. Authorities reported the total weight of the confiscated illegal drugs reached more than 59 kilograms.

The suspects were taken into custody and are currently being held at the Bongao Municipal Police Station. They are expected to face charges for violating Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

PDEA-BARMM said the latest seizure reflects continuing efforts by law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal drug activities in the Bangsamoro region.

Officials emphasized that anti-drug operations will remain ongoing to help ensure the safety of local communities and prevent the distribution of illegal substances.

The agency added that coordination with security forces and local police units remains a key part of their strategy in addressing drug trafficking and related crimes in the area.

The investigation is continuing as authorities work to determine the source of the seized marijuana and identify possible additional individuals involved in the illegal trade.
