Passenger shot by police after refusing security check at Iloilo airport

A 54-year-old passenger was injured after being shot by a police officer inside the boarding area of Iloilo International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. on Jan. 28, following a confrontation at the airport’s central security screening checkpoint.

The passenger was identified as Roland Lañojan, a security guard and resident of Tayong, Sagay, in Camiguin province.

Initial investigation showed that Lañojan refused to undergo the mandatory security inspection after an X-ray machine detected a bladed weapon inside his baggage.

Authorities said airport security personnel required him to comply with standard screening procedures, but the passenger allegedly resisted.

Instead of cooperating, officials said Lañojan pulled out a knife, prompting an immediate response from police officers stationed at the airport.

Video footage of the incident showed the passenger chasing a responding police officer inside the boarding area, raising alarm among airport staff and travelers.

Due to the threat posed by the armed passenger, the officer fired his weapon, striking Lañojan in the chest, authorities said.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
