NewJeans’ dorm inspection by HYBE staff with body camera ignites furious backlash from fans

HYBE, the entertainment conglomerate behind global K-pop acts, is facing fierce criticism after reports surfaced of an employee inspecting the dormitory of NewJeans members with a body camera. Fans and netizens alike have expressed outrage, calling the act invasive and unnecessary.

The controversy began when a forum post on January 13, titled “A HYBE Employee Put A Body Camera and Entered NewJeans’ Members’ Dorm After They Left,” began making rounds on social media. The post referenced an excerpt from Ilgan Sports, which recounted the girl group’s final days under ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE, and detailed the circumstances surrounding their departure.

Body Camera Inspection Sparks Criticism

According to the report, NewJeans officially vacated their dormitory in December 2024 following the conclusion of their contractual obligations with ADOR. Shortly after their departure, a HYBE staff member allegedly entered the premises wearing a body camera to conduct a thorough inspection.

“When NewJeans left the ADOR accommodation, HYBE staff, equipped with body cameras, inspected the dorm thoroughly in preparation,” the excerpt read.

This revelation caused an uproar among fans, with many voicing their discomfort and anger online. Comments flooded social media platforms, with one netizen declaring, “This is so creepy and invasive.”

Another fan expressed frustration, stating, “Instead of inspecting during the day, they chose to do this at night. It’s sick and disgusting.”

Some even accused HYBE of being overly controlling and intrusive, calling the act “vile” and “diabolical.”

Departure From ADOR and Legal Battles

The controversy comes amid a tumultuous period for NewJeans. The five-member group, consisting of Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, announced their departure from ADOR on November 28, 2024. The decision reportedly led to several resignations within ADOR, including performance directors and managers who had worked closely with the group.

Adding to the tension, ADOR filed an injunction on January 13 to prevent the members from signing independent advertising contracts. The legal dispute further fuels speculation about strained relationships between the group and their former management.

Fans Demand Accountability

The dorm inspection incident has intensified criticism of HYBE’s treatment of idols, with many demanding transparency and accountability. “Why was a body camera even necessary?” questioned one netizen. Others have suggested that HYBE’s actions reflect broader issues within the K-pop industry regarding privacy and agency.

As fans rally behind NewJeans, the controversy highlights ongoing concerns over artist management practices. Neither HYBE nor ADOR has released an official statement addressing the allegations.

NewJeans, now operating independently, continues to capture global attention with their fresh talent and engaging performances. However, the group’s journey post-ADOR will likely remain under close scrutiny as fans and industry watchers anticipate further developments.
