United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio paid a courtesy call on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at Malacañang on Tuesday afternoon, with discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations between the Philippines and the United States.
Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel “Babes” Romualdez said the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in defense and economic development.
According to Romualdez, Rubio also conveyed the greetings of US President Donald Trump to Marcos during the meeting.
Romualdez said Trump is also expected to attend the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in November.
The two officials also discussed the continuation of the Luzon Economic Corridor, which Romualdez said is expected to contribute to economic growth and strengthen the Philippines’ economic security.
Romualdez added that the situation in the West Philippine Sea, including Ayungin Shoal, was not a major focus of the meeting and was mentioned only briefly.
He also said the discussions did not cover issues related to the International Criminal Court (ICC) or the United States’ Section 301 tariffs.
The courtesy call marked Rubio’s engagement with the Philippine government as both countries continue discussions on areas of mutual interest, particularly defense cooperation and economic partnerships.
No additional agreements or policy announcements were disclosed following the meeting.
Officials said the discussions underscored the continuing partnership between the Philippines and the United States while highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors.
