The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clarified Thursday that the suspect identified in the shooting incident at the Senate was not an official employee of the agency.
NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag said the suspect earlier identified by the Southern Police District (SPD) as alias “Mel Oragon,” 44, was not part of the bureau’s official personnel records.
The SPD previously described Oragon as an alleged driver of the NBI following the shooting incident near the Senate on Wednesday night.
During a Palace press briefing, Matibag said the agency immediately verified its records after the suspect’s name surfaced in reports.
According to Matibag, the investigation showed that Oragon only served as a “volunteer” who accompanied NBI agents during certain activities.
He also clarified that the suspect did not have official access to firearms under the agency.
Matibag added that authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, including the possibility that the Senate shooting may have been “staged.”
No additional details were immediately released regarding the motive behind the incident or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Authorities have yet to announce whether criminal charges will be filed as the investigation remains ongoing.
The shooting incident drew public attention after the SPD linked the suspect to the NBI, prompting the bureau to issue a clarification on the individual’s status within the agency.
Investigators are expected to continue gathering evidence and reviewing all angles related to the case.
