Authorities in Panabo City, Davao del Norte, made a grim discovery on the night of March 1, 2025—the buried body of a missing 14-year-old girl in Barangay Little Panay.
The victim’s father, Alyas Gerry, reported her missing on February 28. During their search, they found freshly disturbed soil on a property owned by her stepfather, Mark Bernabe, 40, who was immediately identified as a suspect.
Investigators revealed that Bernabe was the last person seen with the girl before she disappeared. A witness, who works in a nearby banana plantation, told authorities that he saw Bernabe and the victim heading toward the area where she was later found.
Authorities suspect foul play, as initial findings indicate that the victim suffered harm before being buried.
Bernabe was taken into custody for questioning. While he initially denied any involvement, he later admitted to the crime after evidence and witness testimonies pointed to him.
The suspect is currently detained at the Panabo City Police Station, where authorities are preparing the appropriate charges against him.
