Government forces recovered firearms and supplies following an armed clash with communist rebels in Sitio Kinawan, Barangay Keytodak, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, on September 26.
Lt. Col. Aeron Gumabao, commander of the 57th Infantry “Masikap” Battalion, said the firefight began around 8:30 a.m. after residents reported the presence of armed men in the area.
During clearing operations, the military confiscated an M16 rifle, a grenade, a two-way radio, subversive documents, personal belongings, and various food supplies left behind by the rebels.
Brig. Gen. Michael Santos of the 603rd Infantry Brigade said the encounter showed how communist strongholds are weakening. He added that government forces remain determined to end the decades-long insurgency.
Maj. Gen. Donald Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, urged remaining rebels to surrender and return to the government’s fold.
Meanwhile, the Lebak Municipal Police Station assured residents that it will continue securing its jurisdiction to maintain peace and order. Police Lt. Col. Joseph Galleto said local officers are coordinating with military units to safeguard the community.
The Joint Task Force Central also continues patrol operations to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas.
