ICC seeks additional protection for 55 witnesses in Duterte trial

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court have requested additional protective measures for 55 witnesses expected to testify in the trial of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a motion filed with Trial Chamber III, the prosecution asked the court to authorize measures aimed at safeguarding the witnesses’ identities and security throughout the proceedings.

The proposed protections include the use of pseudonyms, alterations to witnesses’ faces and voices, and private or closed hearings.

Prosecutors also requested psychological support for witnesses who may experience emotional distress while providing testimony.

Additionally, the prosecution wants existing protective measures maintained for witnesses already enrolled in the ICC Witness Protection Program.

The request aims to prevent potential risks to the witnesses and their families as they participate in the proceedings.

The proposed measures would allow witnesses to testify while limiting the exposure of their identities to the public.

The prosecution’s motion specifically asks the court to consider these additional safeguards for the 55 individuals expected to provide testimony in Duterte’s case.

The request is now before Trial Chamber III, which will determine whether the proposed protective measures will be authorized.
