The Department of Health confirmed that one person died during violent unrest that broke out alongside protest actions in Mendiola-Recto, Manila, on Sunday.
The victim reportedly sustained stab wounds. Despite being rushed to a hospital, the individual was declared dead on arrival.
Health officials also reported a confirmed case of gunshot injury. In total, 48 people were brought to the Department of Health–Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) for treatment.
According to the DOH, six individuals sustained various injuries, including a cut on the foot, eye trauma, head trauma, vascular injury in the left arm, and severe arm wounds. Four of those patients were discharged after treatment, while two remain admitted for further medical care.
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa assured that all patients would be covered under the Zero Balance Billing policy, ensuring no out-of-pocket expenses for those treated at government hospitals.
Officials have not released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of family. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the violence and identify those responsible.
The Department of Health continues to monitor the condition of admitted patients, while law enforcement is expected to provide updates on the clashes in the coming days.
